About Local 1928

The Firefighters of Fort Thomas Fire Department are members of Local 1928 of the International Association of Fire Fighters. As a department we have 18 personnel that are trained as Firefighters and either Paramedics or Emergency Medical Technicians. We provide services to approximately 17,000 citizens and cover an area of about 5.7 square miles. In 2007 we responded to 1,759 emergency incidents.

We are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, no matter if it’s a holiday or not. We are always ready at a moments notice to respond to any type of emergency!

In addition to emergency responses, we also provide several fire prevention services such as life safety inspections on approximately 450 properties; car seat installations; CPR and first aid classes for the community; smoke detector/CO detector installations and maintenance; fire safety classes for children and adults; and many other activities with the goals of life safety and fire prevention. In order to respond to emergency incidents, we check, test, perform maintenance, and re-check all of our equipment frequently. This includes all: tools, hoses, hydrants, trucks, self-contained breathing apparatus, personal protective equipment, and many other items that we use in emergency situations and those items that protect us while performing our jobs.

All members of Local 1928 are committed to providing the highest level of emergency service, but also to make every assurance that each and every member of our association is ensured a workplace that is as safe as possible; a fair and equitable working environment; and compensation to support the employees and their families. We are proud to serve the city of Fort Thomas, and to represent and defend the rights of our Firefighters. We are advocates for a high degree of operational efficiency as we serve the public in their time of need, and seek to be an excellent, safe, well trained, caring, and highly motivated Fire Department.

Our Local is affiliated with the International Association of Fire Fighters, which has about 287,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. We are associated with the Kentucky Professional Fire Fighters Association and one member of our Local sits as a Trustee for the KPFF. We also participate in many community-oriented activities and raise money for charities such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Firefighters that have been disabled or killed in the line of duty.

Every 2 years we negotiate a contract with the City that outlines our working conditions, wages, benefits, details of promotions, and rights of management and us. We will never go on ‘strike’ and are even prohibited from doing any job action by state statute. We always try to reach a win-win agreement with the City on any disagreement.
